A-Level Chemistry explains the world at the level of atoms and molecules. You’ll investigate why substances react, how to predict and control those reactions, and how chemists design new materials and medicines.
It’s a demanding but rewarding course that combines problem solving with plenty of practical work, and it’s essential for many medicine, pharmacy and engineering degrees.
Before you start Year 12, you’ll complete a short Chemistry bridging project over the summer to get a head start, alongside our Sixth Form expectations and dress code.
Electrons, periodicity and how atoms join to form compounds.
Energy changes in reactions, and what controls how fast they happen.
Reversible reactions, Le Chatelier’s principle and industrial applications.
Carbon compounds, reaction mechanisms and synthesis routes.
Trends across the periodic table and the chemistry of transition metals.
Titration, spectroscopy and chromatography, plus careful lab technique.
Course content and assessment can vary by exam board and year. Contact the Sixth Form team for the current specification.
